A meeting in Washington, DC, last month, convened by US National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, brought together a group of international experts to explore the challenges posed by the emergence of direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing. The discussions highlighted not only the state of flux of the science but also the obsolescence of regulations that are out of step with the DTC model. Although state and federal officials remain tight-lipped on how they might refine or alter regulations covering these types of commercial services, several companies are voluntarily attempting to introduce more stringent industry standards.
